The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is known as one of greatest plays written in America. It has been made into one of the great classics of the American theater. It was also the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway, along with the first black director.


A Raisin in the Sun shows the lives of the Younger family. It consists of Mama, Walter (Mama's son), Ruth (Walter's wife), Beneatha (Mama's daughter), and Travis (Ruth's son). They live in a small apartment in Chicago in the 1950's. They recieve an insurance check for $10,000 when Mama's husband dies. Everyone in the family has different ideas about what they want to spend the money on, but mainly, it can be spent on a new house for the family, or a liquor store Walter wants to invest in. Throughout the play they deal with the challenges the new money has brought to them.
