Our African past

After George shows up there ensues a discussion of Berneatha's newfound enthusiasm for things African (including Asagai). At one point George says: "Oh dear, dear, dear. A lecture on the African past. On Our Great West African Heritage! In one second we will hear all about the great Ashanti empires; the great Songhay civilizations; and the great sculpture of Benin--and them some poetry in the Bantu--and the whole monologue will end with the word heritage! Let's face it, baby, your heritage is nothing but a bunch of raggedy-ass spirituals and some grass huts!"

Why do you think George is so angry about Berneatha's new interest in Africa? Why is he so contemptuous of Bantu's and Benin and the rest?

  1. he is angry at her probaly because all she wants to do is talk about culture and he doesn't want to do any of that. he probaly knows about asagai and knows that all of these things she is doing is related to him somehow.

  2. I think that George is so angry about Berneatha's new interest in Africa because he wants her to be made up a certain way, with straightened hair and regular American clothes instead of the African robes she got. I think that he believes Africans aren't smart since he said they were nothing but spirituals in grass huts, when she knows they were more than that.

  3. Walter is mad mostly because of what happened with the money. Since no one would listen to him about his ideas on what to do with it, he didn't think that anything she or anyone said was important. As if he didn't care anymore, and mostly because he was drunk and wasn't thinking right.

  4. It sounds like he is jealous about Berneatha learning about africa. He makes such a big deal about one simple thing. George probably wants to her to learn about somethin that would interest him as well.

  5. I think that George is getting mad because Berneatha's learning all this new stuff from Asagai. And George must have a clue that Berneatha and Asagai have something going on. Either that, or he's getting mad that she's changing just because of the new things that shes learning.

  7. I think that George is mad about Berneatha's new interest in Africa because he probably thinks that the real reasons that berneathas interested in it is because of Asagai. And he probably doesn’t like the fact that berneatha knows more than him about Africa.

  9. George is angry Beneatha is interested with africa bacause she is changing. She is starting to wear the robe's that Asagai gave her. George doesnt like the robes because he thinks that they look stupid. George is probably mad because he is getting jealous of Asagai because Beneatha is spending so much time with him.

  10. First of all i think that it was direspectful for George to say that the West African culture was just about grasshuts, especially to someone he's able to call his girlfriend. I think George was mad about Beneatha's interest in learning more about her heritage because he was probably getting jealous of Asagai's capability of influencing her in doing so, considering that's his girlfriend and not Asagai's. Not that i don't think Bennie wouldn't want to learn more about her culture without Asagai, but i do believe Asagai could've been a reason. i also think that George thought that Bennie looked weird wearing her robes and head dresses.

  12. George is angry because she keeps changing her interest and its hard for him to try to keep up with her if she is always changing her mind about things.

  15. I THINK HE IS JUST HATING ON HER BECAUSE SHE FOUND SOMETHING THAT SHE LIKES TO DO AND HE DOESNT HAVE SOMETHING THAT HE LIKES TO DO. AND MAYBE HE ONT LIKE THOSE PLACES AND MAYBE HAS BAD MEMORIES ABOUT THAT PLACE.

  16. What I got out of this is that George is very angry about Berneatha's new interest in Africa because he wants her to be briught up a certain way, with straight hair and regular American clothes instead of the African robes. I think He believes Africans aren't very smart , he said they were nothing but “ spirituals in grass huts,” when she knows they were more than that.

  18. I think George is angry about that because he's an assimilationist, he hates his race & looks down on it.

  19. i think that it was rude for George to say what he said. The West African culture was just about grasshuts, especially to someone he's able to call his girlfriend. I think George was mad about Beneatha's interest in learning more about her heritage because he was probably getting jealous of Asagai's elligabilty of influencing her in doing so, considering that's his girlfriend and not Asagai's. Not that i don't think Bennie wouldn't want to learn more about her culture without Asagai, but i do believe Asagai could've been a reason. i also think that George thought that Bennie looked weird wearing her robes and head dresses

  20. I think he is mad at Berneatha because she's learning a lot of new things like straighting her her hair insdtead of keeping it natural like a lot of other african american women. He wants her to be proud and to know about her roots.

  21. george is probably getting mad at her because asagai is teaching her stuff about africa and maybe he wanted to teach her about these things instead of asagai and maybe because hes mad at the fact that there together and hes not with her. also hes mad that she learned more things about africa then he did. thats

  22. I think that he is tired of hearing her speak about herself. I also think he is tired of people talkiing about there past in Africa. I think this because he said alot of things about Africa as if he he hears them everyday

  23. i think that George is mad that she just want to learn more about her own race, whcih is also Asagai, but the thing is George deosn't want Berneatha to learn more about the African.

  24. i think george is just angry because he wants berneatha to be different not to be connected with her african past and george just has something against her interest in africa and asagai
